If you know anything about Teen Mom OG star Tyler Baltierra, it's that he had a rough home life. Despite being a good dad to daughter Novalee, Tyler’s father, Butch Baltierra, was the epitome of an absentee parent when he was growing up. In fact, after someone complimented the 25-year-old on being a good parent despite his upbringing, he — in a very roundabout way — gave credit to Butch. "I always said [my dad] taught me what NOT to do as a father, so he still taught me something lol," Tyler wrote on Twitter. Ouch.

These days, Butch (whose real name is Darl) and Tyler have a relationship, but it’s not — nor will it ever be — the healthiest one. Here’s what “Butchy” — as he calls himself on Twitter — has been up to over the last few years.

He’s been in and out of jail. A lot.

For much of Tyler’s childhood, his father was behind bars, and that hasn't changed in recent years. Butch’s rap sheet runs deep. In October 2016, he went to jail for a short period of time after he was caught operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license. Not long before that, he served four years on home invasion, larceny, and breaking and entering charges. He was released from prison in August 2015, just in time to attend Tyler’s wedding to Catelynn Lowell.

He suffers from addiction.

The main reason Butch wasn’t around much was because of his addiction issues. When he wasn't serving time for drug charges, he was, well, doing drugs. On a super depressing note, Butch once told Tyler that he loved cocaine more than he loved him. Tyler has revealed that when he was growing up, he struggled so much with their relationship that he actually tried to hang himself when he was 12 years old. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Tyler still trusts Butch (in a way).

Despite their rocky relationship, Tyler trusts his father from time to time, and has been criticized for it. This past summer, Tyler and Catelynn went on a romantic getaway to Puerto Rico, and left two-year-old Nova with Butch. At the time, he was sober, but it hadn’t been for very long and he was fresh out of prison. In 2017, Tyler was also spotted on a beer run with his father.

He has beef with Farrah Abraham.

For a moment in time, Butch was doing YouTube videos for MTV called “Butch Breaks It Down.” (Just like Jenelle Evans' mom Barbara does now.) In one of Butch’s videos, he slammed Farrah Abraham for getting plastic surgery, saying, “Well, Farrah I guess, when she first started, was a very pretty girl, but then she got all this stuff done to her and to me, personally, she kind of ruined it.” He also said that if his daughter entered the adult entertainment industry, he’d have to “cuss her out.” Because, you know, #morals.

He was married to Catelynn’s mom.

Yes, really. After their kids introduced them, Butch got married to his son’s girlfriend’s mom, April. The pair was together for four years, calling it quits in 2013 after an incident of domestic violence. Since then, April has remarried, and according to Butch, he has no ill will towards his ex. In a 2016 interview with The Ashley, Butch said, “I’m very happy for her. [Ours] was a toxic relationship, it just couldn’t work. I kind of sent her the divorce papers when I was in prison, and she handled the rest. I think her new husband’s a really nice guy. He’s quiet, he don’t say much.” Butch also added that they have a “no contact thing” through his parole. “They put it on again so, no, we don’t mess with each other. But we don’t hate each other, we’re not mad at each other, you know. We don’t do dirty things to each other, none of that! But I’m happy for her, because right now, I’m happy. I’m happy as hell!”
