The Video Music Awards are known as one of the more wild and crazy award shows—but things got serious when Common took the stage and seized the opportunity to bring awareness to Ferguson, Mo.

The rapper called for a heartfelt moment of silence for Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was shot and killed by a police officer on Aug. 9.

During the tribute to the 18-year-old, Kim Kardashian and sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner were seen texting on the audience cam—upsetting many by disrespecting the slain teen.

Fans took to Twitter to express their outrage towards the reality stars for texting during the tribute.

Interestingly enough, the tensions, political unrest and civil protests in Ferguson center on the blatant racism that still exists in America—an issue Kim has previously claimed was near and dear to her heart.

“To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought,” she wrote in May. “It is obviously a topic that Kanye is passionate about, but I guess it was easy for me to believe that it was someone else’s battle.”

Based on her actions last night—some things haven’t really changed after all…
