The 2017 Video Music Awards kicked off with a lot of anticipation, from the debut of Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" video to P!nk accepting the video vanguard award. But in the end, what really happened left us scratching our heads a lot. There were a ton of cringe-worthy moments that seriously made us wonder, "Who thought that was a good idea?"
MUST SEE: Katy Perry Looks Seriously Stunning on the 2017 VMAs Red Carpet — Plus More Celeb Looks!
Most of the show's weirdest moments were caused by host Katy Perry, who's not exactly a comedian. The show kicked off with an unfunny skit of the pop star flying to Mars with the help and advice of actual astronauts. After the skit, Katy flew onto the stage in an astronaut suit and made poorly timed jokes about the current state of affairs in the country. But considering the current turmoil in the country involves Nazis and hurricanes, it wasn't exactly a topic to cheekily poke fun at.
To make matters worse, she later did a skit where she read old tweets she regretted sending (fake tweets, obviously). We have to commend her for making fun of the poor sales of Witness, but each joke got lukewarm reactions from the audience, causing Katy to laugh awkwardly and shrug throughout the whole show. And let's not even get started on how she fake-spoiled the finale of Game of Thornes. She then asked the audience if they were happy they chose the VMAs over GOT, and the crowd went seriously silent. We guess we give her props for trying?
As for the rest of the show? Well, it just got weirder. Check out the gallery below for highlights of the biggest "huh?" moments from the VMAs.
OK, so maybe the pop star isn't a comedian, and we applaud her for poking fun at herself (addressing her poor album sales and even the infamous JonBenét Ramsey rumor), but her delivery had us watching through our fingers. From tone deaf gags about politics to even outdated Fyre Festival jokes, everything fell embarrassingly flat.
