Since losing one of their own—Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes—we can imagine that performing has been incredibly emotional for the remaining members of TLC, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas; yet when the women took the stage at the American Music Awards, they sang “Waterfalls” just as beautifully as they did when then the song debuted in 1995—even though Lil Mama was standing in for Left Eye.
However, backstage at last night’s AMAs, the women addressed another rumor about “replacing” their fallen sister: Would they ever use a hologram to sing along with Lisa one last time?
“That’s always been a rumor,” Chilli told the crowd backstage. “I mean, it’s something that we thought about many years ago.”
At the 2012 Coachella festival, Snoop Dogg had famously used a hologram to rap alongside the late Tupac Shakur; but for now, T-Boz explained it would be too hard for them.
“We can’t emotionally deal with, you know, her standing [right there],” she explained. “That’s just way too much right now.”
As for Lil Mama—she knows as well as anyone else that no one can truly replace Left Eye; but she called the opportunity to sing alongside the “iconic” TLC “a surreal moment.”
“The chemistry was there,” she said. “And I had a great time.”
