The famous 50s actor was found dead Saturday night at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., with the cause of his death reported as natural causes.
Garner has a long history of heart issues including undergoing quintuple bypass heart surgery in 1988 and suffering a stroke in 2008.
Throughout his 50-plus years in the film industry, he has accumulated more than 80 movie and TV credits. He was best known for the Maverick with Mel Gibson and The Rockford Files TV series as well as 1963’s The Great Escape, in which he starred alongside Steve McQueen.
More recently, Garner appeared as an astronaut with Clint Eastwood in 2000’s Space Cowboys, 2001’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire and in ABC’s 8 Simple Rules as Katey Sagal’s father from 2003-2005.
He also played Duke (the older Ryan Gosling) in The Notebook, in which he narrated the story – that everyone fell in love with – to a fellow nursing home resident in the film.
