Pluto—we’re not in Disneyworld anymore!
Looks like Miley Cyrus isn’t the only former child star to shed a cookie-cutter, Disney Channel persona; the Jonas Brothers posed for the cover of Out Magazine looking a little different than the how you might remember them—but we’re not complaining!
“It wasn’t my favorite performance of hers,” 24-year-old Joe admitted. “I think that there’s one way of saying you’ve grown up and there’s another way—I think that’s her way. Look, people are talking about it, so I think it’s working for what she wants.”
Nick, who not only joined his brothers in touring with Miley in 2007, but also dated the 20-year-old singer when he was younger, echoed this sentiment.
“She’s smart,” he said. “She’s very smart –We’ve always known that about her. She’ll always be successful. [Her VMA performance] was funny—I was laughing.”
As for Nick, Joe and Kevin—showing that they’ve grown up is definitely taking a different route; rather than doing it through risqué performances, they are doing it through their music, which Nick called “more opinionated.”
“We have a lot of people hearing new stud, and maybe they have had misconceptions in the past of who we are as a band,” Kevin explained. “At the end of the day, I think people are surprised to know that we’re a rock band at our core.”
Joe agreed, explaining that the video for the single “First Time” was a way to change people’s perceptions as well, saying that, “People assume that we’re still these young kids.”
Another common misperception that they constantly face is that they’re gay—and posing for Out may only fuel the rumors. But they agree that it’s not an image they’re offended by.
“It’s a boy band stereotype,” Joe explained. “People assume, but we don’t take offense.”
Another thing they set the record straight on? Whether you’ll be see these guys twerking like the guys in One Direction. Well, it depends who you ask.
Joe’s “great” with twerking (as long as the person knows what they’re doing.Nick said it’s “too much.” Kevin—who is expecting his first child with wife Danielle—said it’s not about the move, but rather, the timing.
“I’m straight down the middle,” he revealed. “The right amount at the right time.”
