Lionel Richie’s accomplished career earned him the honor of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards this weekend—but that didn’t stop the award show from messing up the singing legend’s name, and flashing “Lionel Ritchie” on the screen!
Fans were quick to notice the gaffe, and the misspelling of his name trended on Twitter during the award show ceremony.
Rule No. 1 when giving a lifetime achievement award, spell recipients name right. BET Awards botch Lionel Richie: http://t.co/M3Ocil4pkv— Dave Briggs (@davebriggstv) June 30, 2014
Lionel Richie ... Thanks for a lifetime of music and in return ... We're gonna misspell your damn name ... Signed BET pic.twitter.com/vybOrGlCfw— Troy Hughes™ (@TommySledge) June 30, 2014
This man wins the lifetime achievement award but BET can't even spell his name right smh it's Lionel Richie not Ritchie #BETAwards— Oliver Khedawy (@EgyptianKiddo) June 30, 2014
Luckily, it was ultimately Lionel’s timeless music—which was honored in a tribute featuring John Legend, Pharrell Williams and Yolanda Adams—and his powerful message that stole the show, not the unfortunate typo.
“Soul is a feeling. Not a color,” the 65-year-old said, accepting the award. “Talent is a God-given gift, and not a category. Out of the box is that magical place where talent—pure talent—goes to live and thrive and breathe. And may you never give that up as long as you’re in this business.”
Of course, Lionel isn’t the first victim of an epic award show fail. See how his compares to these six others!
