Earlier today, Selena Gomez announced that she would be cancelling her upcoming tour or Australia and Asia, set to kick off in mid-January.

In a statement she released, Selena explained that she was in need of personal time.

“My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them,” the statement read. “But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be. To my fans, I sincerely apologize and I hope you guys know how much each and every one of you mean to me.”

Sel’s decision to cancel her tour came after a particularly difficult year in the 21-year-old’s life; late last year, she and her long-term boyfriend, Justin Bieber called it quits, giving her a rocky start for 2013.
And unfortunately, things only got worse.

Check out our timeline of Selena’s rough year—that eventually escalated into her cancelled tour.

January 17 – Selena gives an interview at the Golden Globes that makes fans question her sobriety at the Award Show.

January 19 – The newly single singer performs at a UNICEF fundraiser in New York and performs Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River,” adding that the song “speaks” to her.

February 7 – The brunette beauty’s mood surely took a dip when she was protested at New York Fashion Week; United Students Against Sweatshops took issue with Selena for her involvement as a style ambassador for Adidas NEO.

March 6 – Amidst her press tour for Spring Breakers, the former Disney Channel actress opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about her relationship with Justin Bieber. “To me, love is normal. Of course, you see Jay and BeyoncĂ© and you’re like, “Oh, my gosh, they’re so perfect for each other,’ but at the end of the day their love is just like everybody else’s love. They have problems, I’m sure, and they solve them, like anybody else.”

April 8 – Just in time to premiere, “Come and Get it,” Sel opened up about how interesting it was to start the album at a completely different point in her life than when she finished; she told E! News, “After going through some of the most interesting, cool times in my life, I’ve come out a better person. And it’s definitely what I want to exude.”

April 8 – The young star became the latest celebrity to be involved with a “swatting” trend, in which pranksters call 911 and claim that there’s a burglary at a celebrity’s house.

April 15 – Selena came under fire by Hindu groups after she decided to wear a bindi strictly for decorative purposes.

July 18 – Rather than hide her feelings about her past relationship, Selena got candid when speaking to Ryan Seacrest on his radio program. “I’m sure you could actually see those pictures of me being, like, way stressed out about it. And it’s hard, because what do you do? Do you just wanna sit in your house and hide and not go anywhere?”

July 25 – Just days after turning 21, a video surfaces of Selena falling while getting out of her car, making people question what’s going on with the young actress.

August 26 – Selena revealed that when she was done with the Stars Dance tour, she planned on taking a break from singing in order to focus on her acting career. Of course, this break came early as a result of her cancelled tour.

November 4 – As the cover girl for the December issue, Ms. Gomez opened up to Teen Vogue and revealed that her breakup with Justin left her feeling “broken.” She said, “You fall in love and it completely consumes you. So a part of you is broken when that’s gone. And part of you wants to have that rebellious feeling where you’re just like, forget it, I can do anything I want.

December 6 – The Spring Breakers actress shocked her fan when she cursed and stormed off stage a Jingle Ball concert when the sound wasn’t working; according to reports, she dropped the mic and walked off stage even though she promised to sing two more songs.
