It’s the end of an era. Jon Stewart announced yesterday, Feb. 10, that he’s leaving The Daily Show after nearly 17 years at his desk.
The news first broke when audience members who watched yesterday’s taping leaked his confession to go off air, but in last night’s episode, he made his official, sad farewell and did so in a truly Jon Stewart style — with humor and self-deprecation.
“Seventeen years is the longest I have ever in my life held a job,” he quipped, “by 16 years and five months.”

He said he had been given “an incredible opportunity” to lead the program, adding, “In my heart, I know it is time for someone else to have that opportunity.”
The 52-year-old admitted the plan is still a work in progress, and he doesn’t know whether he’ll be leaving his desk as early as July, or even as late as December — but when commenting on his future plans, it’s clear he’s looking forward to retirement.
“I’m gonna have dinner, on a school night, with my family — who, I have learned from multiple sources, are lovely people,” he joked.
