"Duck (Doug) Silverman came into my life about 14 years ago," she wrote. "He was picked up by the State running through South Central [L.A.] with no collar, tags, or chip." The dog was taken to a shelter, where Sarah adopted him.
Sarah said that over the last few years, Duck had become deaf, blind, and arthritic but still remained happy and loving. A few days ago, he stopped eating and drinking, which is when she knew she had to "let him go." She was with Duck when a vet put him to sleep.
The post, which Sarah calls an obituary for her dog, ends with:
14 years. My longest relationship. My only experience of maternal love. My constant companion. My best friend.
Our thoughts are with Sarah and anyone else who's ever had to say goodbye to a pet.
