Earlier this month, researchers out of University of Maryland and Wellesley College found the teenage birth rates dropped among young women who watched 16 & Pregnant and the Teen Mom franchises—and after watching the season five premiere of Teen Mom 2, it almost makes sense.
During the premiere, which aired on Jan. 21, the girls of Teen Mom 2—Jenelle Evans, Chelsea Houska, Kailyn Lowry and Leah Calvert—have grown up considerably in the new season, which means they are facing some serious, adult decisions.

Season five promised to be more dramatic than ever, and so far it’s keeping that promise—in the form of a big, fat reality check.
We’re only one episode in, but we can tell there’s a lot in store for the upcoming season of Teen Mom 2. Check out the 4 “realest” moments of the popular reality show.
1. Jenelle Gets an Abortion
In one of the darker moments of the series, Teen Mom 2 signature bad girl Jenelle decides to get an abortion. While she worries about the emotional and physical effects of the abortion, you have to admire Jenelle’s maturity when it came to the decision.
She explains that as a young mother and recovering heroin addict, it wouldn’t be fair to have another baby when she doesn’t even custody of her son, Jace.
2. Kail Fights to Be Closer to Javi
Kailyn and her husband Javi may be newlyweds, but their marriage is already facing one major hardship—he’s currently stationed with the Air Force two hours away, Delaware. While they make due with Javi coming to Pennsylvania on the weekends, Kailyn is expecting her second child and wants her entire family to be together.
Unfortunately, there’s a catch: Kail can’t move her son, Isaac, out of state from Isaac’s dad, Jo—which means they have to face off in court.
3. Leah Learns Ali’s Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Leah’s three little girls are adorable, but definitely a handful—especially with Aliannah’s health issues. In this season, Leah must come to terms with Ali’s diagnosis of a rare, incurable form of muscular dystrophy that will worsen as she grows and gets older.
In the new issue of In Touch Weekly, on newsstands now, Leah opens up about the diagnosis.
“We were scared because we didn’t know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers,” she said. “We never gave up and never will."
4. Chelsea Deals With Adam Moving On
Now that Chelsea’s ex, Adam Lind, is out of jail, the young mom has to deal with the reality of him wanting more time with their daughter, Aubree.
To make the situation even more complicated, Adam and his new girlfriend are expecting a new baby together, but Chelsea struggles to explain these complex relationships to Aubree.
