Law enforcement sources (who spoke on the condition of anonymity) have confirmed that Richard Matt (left) — one of the two convicted murderers who have been on the run since fleeing a maximum security prison on June 6 — has been shot and killed, multiple outlets are reporting.
His co-conspirator, David Sweat, is still on the run.

A massive manhunt has been underway since Matt, 48, and Sweat, 34, broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York earlier this month. Prison employee Joyce Mitchell, 51, has been charged with one felony of promoting contraband within the jail and a misdemeanor count for allegedly assisting their escape. She has pleaded not guilty.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the criminals used power tools to saw through their cell wall, creating an opening which they were able to use to escape in a fashion many have compared to the fictional prison break in The Shawshank Redemption.
Matt — who was reportedly killed by police in a wooded area about 30 miles from the jail — was serving 25 years to life for kidnapping and beating a man to death in 1997.
Officials allegedly know the “general vicinity” of Sweat, who was serving a life sentence for killing a police officer in 2002.
This story is still developing.
