These days, it seems like it’s easy to go from obscurity to fame thanks to “going viral.” But before we had a new superstar every week, Thomas Beattie managed to go from a normal life to superstardom like never before. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, that’s probably because you know Thomas by his alter ego — “The Pregnant Man.”
Thomas first entered the spotlight in early 2008, when he was pregnant with his first child — he and his ex-wife Nancy’s daughter, Nancy, 9. Later that year, he revealed that he was pregnant again, and his pregnancies with his two other children — eight-year-old Austin and seven-year-old Jensen — were highly documented.
For those unfamiliar with Thomas’ story, it began in 1974 Hawaii, where he was born as a baby girl named Tracy. In his young adult life, he was involved in the pageant scene and was even named a finalist in Miss Hawaii Teen USA as a teenager. However, as early as the age of 10, Thomas began to self-identify as a man, and began to transition to male at the age of 23.
As he explained in a personal essay for The Advocate, which first introduced the public to Thomas, he and his ex-wife Nancy always thought of having kids as a “dream” rather than a “plan” because of his wife undergoing a hysterectomy 20 years before the birth of their first child. However, they later realized that they had another viable option: Thomas could carry the child.
Since the birth of their three children, Thomas and Nancy have largely stayed out of the public eye. In 2012, they two filed for divorce, and Thomas has since remarried. Curious what else is going on with Thomas and his family since their headline-making pregnancies? Check out the gallery to see what they look like today!
