In her continued fight with lupus, Selena Gomez revealed to her fans that she underwent a kidney transplant over the summer. In a touching Instagram post, the “Hands to Myself” singer opened up about the operation.

Now, Selena and Francia Raisa are finally talking about the trying experience. They recently appeared on The Today Show to discuss the moments leading up to their surgeries. “I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life. And she volunteered and did it,” the star explained.

Selena had her kidney transplant surgery almost two months ago. Her fans noticed she had been MIA and she finally decided to explain why. “So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she wrote. “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.”

She also took the time to thank her friend Francia, who donated her kidney to the pop star. “And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,” she added. “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.” Watch the video below to see photos from the hospital, including her scar.

Selena, 25, has been very open about her struggle with lupus. In a 2015 interview, the brunette beauty revealed she checked herself into a rehab facility to spend time on herself. “I think it was just very complicated because I didn’t understand and then that was something that I did want to keep private until my whole life suddenly wasn’t private,” she said. “So, it was my moment. I’m really honestly able to relate to people and I get it.”

She continued, “It’s kind of one of those situations. You just have to take care of yourself.” According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus is a “chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs).”
