There are no words to describe the unimaginable loss a parent feels after losing a child. But Nik Richie—husband of reality TV star Shayne Lamas—is not only trying to channel those emotions, but is also sharing them with the world at large.
On Feb. 9, Shayne, who was 20 weeks pregnant at the time, was rushed to a hospital after she collapsed at her Orange County home. Doctors determined that Shayne was bleeding internally near her uterus, but were unable to determine a cause.
While her life was spared during the procedure, Nik and Shayne tragically lost the baby—a son, to be named Rex Jagger.
“I’m writing this to say thank you, to let you know how truly blessed I am to be your father,” Nik wrote to R.J. in a letter published by TMZ. “You brought meaning to your parents’ life in a way you’ll never know and you’ll always be in our hearts and thoughts.”
R.J. was Nik and Shayne’s second child. The couple have a 2-year-old daughter, named Press.
“I named you Rex Jagger, R.J. You had a name, a family, and a life ready for the taking,” the letter continues. “I’m realizing that life doesn’t always work out the way you imagine. I’m sorry.”
Since the day they lost Rex, Shayne has been facing a serious medical battle herself. Initial reports stated she was in coma, Nik has clarified that she has been aware of her medical situation.
R.J.’s life may have been lost—but that meant saving Shayne; a situation that Nik made clear he is not taking for granted.
“God has a plan for us all. He gave me an amazing son who will always watch over our family,” he continued in the letter. “You saved your mother’s life with your passing and I will never forget how much this means to me, R.J.
"In family, we sacrifice for each other. You gave your life for us. You showed me how to love.
“I need you to know that I held you, spoke to you, kissed you and that you’ll be remembered. You are perfect. You will always be my son. I’m proud of you, always. I love you, Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie.”
As of Monday, Feb. 17, Shayne has remained in intensive care after her heart “gave out” on Valentine’s Day.
Our thoughts are with the entire Lamas-Richie family during this time.
