Norman Jean Roy for Vogue
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West may have snagged the coveted cover of Vogue, but it turns out the real star of the April issue made her own debut in the pages of the coveted fashion magazine—and no, we’re not talking about 10-month-old North West!
Nope—the real hero of the April issue is none other than Mindy Kaling! And her feature in the mag could not be more different than Kimye’s controversial coverage.
Not to say it’s lacking in any elegance or sophistication, the funny lady’s interview reminds us all why she’s the greatest—and why we all want to be her BFF.
“I feel the same way about clothes as I do about food,” Mindy tells the fashion mag. “I want everything.”
Seriously—have truer words ever been spoken?

For the actress and creator of her successful sitcom, The Mindy Project, the Vogue interview is just a celebration of being herself—rather than trying too hard to appear trendy and en vogue (pun, of course, intended).
One of the biggest ways she proved this was by discussing her weight, which has been a topic of a lot of criticism since her success on The Office and beyond.
In fact, her weight made her the center of her own magazine cover controversy of Kimye proportions. In January, Mindy was one of four actresses—the others being Amy Poehler, Allison Williams and Zooey Deschanel—to get her very own cover for the “Women in TV”-themed issues.
While the other women were featured in full-body shots, Mindy’s cover zoomed in on her face—prompting some to believe it was an attack on her full-figured physique. The Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me author stood by her cover—explaining why the backlash was more offensive than the cover itself.
“I was, for the first time in my career, on the cover of a fashion magazine, which is an awesome, nice thing. It felt great,” she told David Letterman in January.
“I didn’t expect this reaction,” she added. “The implication was, ‘What, Elle, you can’t put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? ‘Cause she’s just fat and gruesome? Why can’t we look at her beautiful, fat body?’”

When it came time for her Vogue feature, she proved—once again—to be one of the most grounded stars in Hollywood by not just accepting her body, but being realistic about her expectations—instead of conforming to showbiz standards.
“There’s a whole list of things I would probably change about myself. For example, I’m always trying to lost 15 pounds,” she told Vogue. “But I never need to be skinny. I don’t want to be skinny. I’m in a constant state of self-improvement, but I don’t beat myself up over it.”
That’s it—we want a Mindy Kaling Vogue cover! And another book, ASAP. And maybe a a coffee date—if it’s not too much to ask!
