In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, she describes that time in her like as “really the worst” and reveals that she found out about the affair less than a day before the photos of Kristen, 23, and Rupert’s, 42, roadside kisses went viral.
“I have no words to describe what we went through,” the beauty tells VF. “But I think, for me, something always has to completely die for there to be a rebirth. And, for me, I feel like I’m going through a rebirth.”
Rupert directed Kristen in her hit Snow White and the Huntsmen; pictures of the two first circulated in July 2012. Not only were Rupert and Liberty still married, but it was also revealed that Kristen was still romantically linked to her Twilight costar Robert Pattinson.
After the scandal, Kristen apologized publicly to her on-and-off-screen lover.
“I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused for those close to me and everyone this has affected,” she said in a statement.
Rupert also released a statement, saying. “I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart.”
Though the couple has since divorced, Liberty made it clear to VF that forgives Rupert.
“We were together for 16 years and that in itself is really beautiful,” she said. “And we’ve created two exceptional lives together.”
