Miley Cyrus Lights a
Joint At the 2013
European Music Awards
– Has She Finally Gone
Miley Cyrus knows a thing or two about how to get a crowd (and by crowd, we mean the whole world) talking; homegirl is a pro when it comes to causing a “controversy”—and she knows it too!
In an October interview on TODAY, Miley told Matt Lauer that her VMA performance went “exactly as planned,” because “it’s a month later and we’re still talking about it!”
Which makes us wonder: Maybe everything Miley is doing is just an act! Her most recent stunt occurred last night at MTV’s European Music Awards, which were held in Amsterdam; Miley, who was not only performed but also won awards, celebrated by lighting up a joint—on stage!
This may be the wildest thing Miley has ever done—but this isn’t the first time she has done something outrageous and we thought she’d gone to far! Check out her previous controversies—and see how she’s certainly changed the meaning of “She’s Just Being Miley!”
1. Salvia Controversy vs. Smoking Onstage
Then: In December of 2010, TMZ got their hands on a video Miley taking a hit from a bong to celebrate her 18th birthday; after the video went viral, Miley’s camp were quick to respond to the panicking fans who thought Miley was using illegal drugs by explaining that Miley was actually smoking Salvia, which is a psychoactive plant that is actually legal to purchase and consume.
Following the incident, Miley responded to Marie Claire, saying, “I’m not perfect… I made a mistake… I’m disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans.”
The next year, Miley found herself in a bit of trouble again, when, to celebrate her 19th birthday in November 2011, when, according to The Daily Mail, she allegedly said, “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake!”
Now: Since then, Miley has been completely open about her affection for marijuana; in September, she told Rolling Stone that she thinks “weed is the best drug on Earth,” and she smoked up the stage at the EMAs. Oh how times have changed!
2. Grinding on a Stripper Pole (2009 Teen Choice Awards) vs. Grinding on Robin Thicke (2013 Video Music Awards)
Then: In 2009, the same year that Hannah Montana: The Movie was released and Miley was beginning to break away from her Disney Channel, cookie-cutter persona, the starlet made headlines for performing her hit, “Party in the USA,” at the Teen Choice Awards.
Halfway through her performance, Miley climbed atop an ice cream cart, and danced with a stripper pole—horrifying parents of her younger fans.
Now: For the 2013 Video Music Awards, Miley performed “We Can’t Stop” and instead of grinding on a pole, she grinded on Robin Thicke—as if you didn’t already know, her performance became the talking point in Hollywood and mainstream news alike.
3. “Can’t Be Tamed” Video vs. “Wrecking Ball” Video
Then: In June 2010, Miley released the video for “Can’t Be Tamed” and—in retrospect—was probably making her first attempt at changing her image to something edgier and more exciting; the video featured an darker side of Miley, who not only wore wings, but also very revealing, tight-fitting clothing as she danced in a cage.
Now: Earlier this year, Miley released the video for “Wrecking Ball,” in which she wears nothing; also, she rides a wrecking ball (while completely naked) and makes out with a sledgehammer. The whole thing—while it offers a powerful video to accompany a pretty heavy song—makes “Can’t Be Tamed” look very, very PG.
4. Her Vanity Fair Cover vs. Anything She Wears Regularly
Then: In 2008, Miley and photographer Annie Leibovitz got heat when she shot the then-15 year old exposing her bare back—with her front covered only by a sheet—in a series of portraits for Vanity Fair.
Gary Marsh, the president of entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide, expressed his outrage, saying, “For Miley Cyrus to be a ‘good girl’ is now a business decision for her. Parents have invested in her a godliness. If she violates that trust, she won’t get it back.”
Now: What was once considered risqué is relatively mild for the starlet; the Vanity Fair portraits are nothing compared to the shots taken by “Wrecking Ball” director and artist Terry Richardson—which show Miley panty-less in sheer leggings, using only her hands to cover her breasts.
Even some of Miley’s everyday wears are more revealing than that photoshoot—remember the era of Miley’s sideboob!?
5. Shower Selfies vs. Shower Selfies
Then: In 2008, Miley’s phone was hacked, and “racy” pictures of Miley posing in the shower were unearthed; the best part is that the photos were allegedly intended for then-boyfriend Nick Jonas; much like Niley’s image at the time, the pics were squeaky clean.
Now: Miley is still down to pose in the shower, albeit professionally; for her September Rolling Stone cover, one outtake included a picture of Miley in the shower—shot by alleged hookup Theo Wenner.
Even yesterday, Miley snapped a selfie in the shower and shared it on Twitter—we guess old habits die hard!
