When Derick Dillard got down on one knee and asked Jill Duggar to marry him, the 19 Kids and Counting family immediately knew their large family had grown by one more—and will, hopefully, eventually bring in many more members with grandchildren—but first Michelle had to get over her initial fear of losing one of her beloved children to the adult world.
“It really is exciting for our first daughter to be engaged. Even Jim Bob tears up quite a bit these days,” the Duggar matriarch wrote on their family blog.
“He’s so happy for Jill and he really appreciates Derick and who he is. We know Derick is going to make a great husband and, hopefully, father.
“But, at the same time, Jim Bob and I are saying to ourselves, ‘Oh wow.’ We’re realizing our girl is going to start a home and her own family, and that’s a big deal, especially for dad.”

She goes on to praise her daughter for maintaining the high standards in her relationship that her parents always encouraged—but she knows that as soon as Jill and Derick’s June 21 wedding rolls around, the path they choose is anyone’s guess.

“Jill and Derick have so much in common, especially their focus on the Lord and their love for outreach and ministry. It’s going to be exciting to see how the Lord uses them together,” she wrote.
“And after they get married who knows where they’ll be?”
Luckily, mom doesn’t have too much to worry about. Jill made sure the 25-year-old accountant was “The One” on their first Skype date—before she moved forward with a relationship of any kind.
“It was an interrogation,” she told People of the three-page-long list of questions she “grilled” him with during their first chat. “I didn’t want to not have the guts to ask the tough questions.”
