For the 10th season of So You Think You Can Dance, judge Mary Murphy is sharing the inside scoop with In Touch readers— everything from show highlights to personal predictions. In Week 2, Mary talks about the new format change for the show and who she was sad to see go home. Check back every week for more scoop from Mary!

Last night’s show was such a huge change for everyone! For the first time, we held our elimination at the top of the show now that So You Think You Can Dance is only once a week. All of us are trying to wrap our heads around it. My Twitter followers blew up my account, sounding off on how they didn’t like the new format change - and I’m not so sure I like it myself.

I think it is very difficult to start a show with losing two people and then have them dance with their partner later on in the night. It’s a little bit awkward. Not only that, you are left wondering if the dancer who is eliminated could have a spectacular night. It would be very easy to change the format back I would think. If there is enough out-cry on social media, maybe we can bring it back!

Although the new show format might have thrown me for a loop, I was totally into last night’s stellar performances. One of my favorite numbers was Amy and Fik-Shun’s hip-hop routine. They are just so cute! From the minute they step onto the stage, you can’t help but fall in love with them. Their choreographers, Tabitha and Napoleon studied them as dancers and knew how to craft a dance that was perfect for them. Their performance was exactly what we wanted to see from them.

Another couple that really impressed me was Alan and Jasmine. I was particularly taken by the physicality in their Argentine tango routine. The types of lifts in that dance can be so hard to learn, especially in the short amount of time that these dancers are given. It could have gone so incredibly wrong, but it didn’t. Alan was looking good. He has a great stage presence, and Jasmine is just gorgeous to watch. It was fantastic!

I have to admit that I was disappointed in the Bollywood routine from Malece and Jade. They did respectable, but in comparison to the other numbers of the night, it still wasn’t the best. I felt that Malece has the full confidence yet. I truly feel like she is behind the 8-ball so to speak, still. It could be that working with Jade has been a tough road for her. She looks great on camera and has fabulous technique. I’m just hoping she stays in the competition long enough for us to see her emerge into the artist that I think she can become. I think if we give her some partner switch-ups, she could emerge as a dominant player in the competition.

It was really tough for me to see Carlos and Brittany go last night during the elimination. I think Brittany is one of the best girls, and out of all the solos, Carlos’ was definitely the best. I was devastated to see them go.

I’m looking forward to seeing Jenna and tucker come back because we looked at them as a powerhouse couple. They didn’t have the best night last night. I’d like to see them come back and really create a moment to shine!

Until your next trip on the hot tamale train,
Mary
