She writes about how her son asked her if there was any personal information that she was withholding from him and she admitted that there was things—“adult stuff”—that she didn’t disclose… including her love life. Finally, he asked his mother whether she was currently romantic with anyone.
“He was right,” Mario writes in the editorial. “I was with someone romantically and I hadn’t told him. I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son.”

Maria continues the piece by reflecting on her past relationships with men, and expressing her disappointment in those intimate relationships; while reliving those failed relationships, she came across a picture of her and her now-girlfriend, Clare, and wrote about how they were together.
“We had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual,” she wrote. “She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden, that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.”
