Journalist Lisa Ling’s sister, Laura, has been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in North Korea. Laura and her friend, Euna Lee, were arrested on March 17 by North Korean military officials, who claimed the women entered North Korean soil while reporting from China. The trial was set for June 4, and over the weekend, the families remained hopeful after not hearing anything. Lisa even Tweeted, “Trying to believe that Laura and Euna have won some hearts over, hence the silence.” But Laura and Euna were sentenced. U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelley released a statement, saying, "We are deeply concerned by the reported sentencing of the two American citizen journalists by North Korean authorities, and we are engaged through all possible channels to secure their release."
