Cory’s life tragically ended in July; the official cause of his death, as stated on his autopsy, was “a mixed drug toxicity.” He was 31 years old.
In addition to Cory, James Gandolfini, All in the Family’s Jean Stapleton, Family Ties producer Gary David Goldberg and Jonathan Winters of Mork & Mindy will all be honored with special tributes presented by stars closed to them.
Primetime Emmys executive producer Ken Ehrlich explained that these late entertainers made significant contributions and he wanted to honor them beyond just a slide in the in memoriam segment.
“These five individuals brought us such great entertainment and joy, so having their close friends share personal remembrances is something that will be very meaningful for television audiences across the country and across the generations,” he explained to Variety.
While Jane and Cory may have butted heads onscreen, the two were close off screen and she’s one of the many stars who has discussed the difficulty the stars have faced continuing the series without Cory.
“I don’t think he left one day unlived,” Jane said on The Tonight Show. “He was a real bright light in our family and we’ve lost a really great guy.”
The Emmy Awards will be broadcast on CBS on Sunday, Sept.
