It's been just days since actor Kevin Spacey came out as gay after Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp claimed in an interview with BuzzFeed News that the Hollywood vet made a sexual advance on him as a teenager. And now, a representative of the American Beauty star confirmed to Us Weekly that he would be seeking treatment following the claims. “Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment,” the rep said. “No other information is available at this time.”
Anthony, 46 — who has been out publicly since 1992 — told the outlet that Kevin, 58, made a pass at him in 1986, when both actors were starring on Broadway. Anthony, who was 14 at the time of the alleged encounter, said that Kevin, who was 26, invited him to a party at his apartment. However, the young thespian got bored and went to Kevin’s bedroom to watch TV. After everyone had left the party, Anthony said that Kevin appeared in the doorway of the room, visibly intoxicated.

“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold,” Anthony told BuzzFeed News. “But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me.”
The actor, who went on to star in Rent, continued, “He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.” Anthony said that he was able to push Kevin off, and then ran to the bathroom and closed the door.
“I was like, ‘What is happening?’ I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, ‘Oh. He’s gay. I guess,'” he explained. “Then I opened the door, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to go home now.’ He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, ‘Are you sure you wanna go?’ I said, ‘Yes, good night,’ and then I did leave.”
Years later, Anthony is still haunted by the memory. “I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it,” he said, adding that he was inspired to come forward with his story after Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault scandal. “I’m hopeful that this can make a difference.”
In his statement, Kevin vehemently apologized — but said he does not recall Anthony’s account of their interaction. “I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor,” the Tony winner wrote. “I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave as he described, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life,” Kevin continued. “I know that there are other stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had romantic relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”
Rosie O'Donnell bashed the actor following his statement, tweeting "u don’t remember the incident – 30 years ago? – f--k u kevin – like Harvey we all knew about u – I hope more men come forward." She then added "he was known as someone gay men should beware of. I had ‘heard’ the stories – not that he molested 14 yr old boys – it doesn’t surprise me – and it's gross to use that accusation to come out."
In response to Kevin's statement, Netflix announced that his hit show House of Cards will be ending after its upcoming sixth season. The online streaming service released a joint statement with production studio Media Rights Capital that read: "Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night's news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night's revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time."
