Remember that time Katy Perry sang about kissing a girl and liking it on her 2008 hit single “I Kissed a Girl“? Well, it turns out there is A LOT more to that story than she admitted to on the track.

“Truth be told, I did more than that! But how was I going to reconcile that with the gospel-singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps? What I did know was that I was curious, and even then I knew that sexuality was not as black and white as this dress,” Katy said while accepting the National Equality Award at the 2017 Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Gala over the weekend.

The “Last Friday Night” songstress added that she would “pray the gay away” at religious camp and that things changed when she met other members of the LGBT community.

“I found my gift and my gift introduced me to people outside my bubble and my bubble started to burst. These people were nothing like I had been taught to fear. They were the most free, strong, kind and inclusive people I have ever met,” Katy explained. “They stimulated my mind, and they filled my heart with joy, and they danced with joy while doing it. These people are actually magic, and they are magic because they are living their truth.”
