Baseball legend Jose Canseco accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun on Tuesday, Oct. 28, Las Vegas police say.
Shortly after, the news was confirmed by his fiancé, model Leila Knight, who took to Twitter to thank fans for keeping the controversial slugger in their thoughts and prayers while he was in surgery.
“This is Leila. Thank you all for the kind words and prayers. Jose is still in surgery and will be ok. Please pray for his finger,” she wrote.

Hours earlier, she told the Daily News he had been cleaning one of his four weapons when he accidentally blew off the middle finger on his left hand. Having been at the shooting range just a few days earlier, he didn’t realize the gun was still loaded.
“The middle finger was hanging by a thread and I wrapped his hand in a towel and then called 911,” the model said.
“The doctors said they would either have to amputate or do reconstructive surgery. But if they do surgery, he won’t be able to use it again. He blew away an artery and a big bone chunk.”
Leila added that the incident motivated her to remove all weapons from their Las Vegas home.
“We have four guns in the house. We are now going to have zero. I hate guns,” she vented. “Jose is a little freaked out… But we’re extremely lucky it wasn’t worse or that he didn’t shoot me.”
