Jon Gosselin insists he “took the high road” when he quit Jon & Kate Plus 8 in 2009. While he was suddenly making a lot less money, he exclusively tells In Touch that what he got in return was priceless: “freedom.”

Now living in a modest cabin in rural Pennsylvania, Jon makes ends meet waiting tables at a local restaurant, selling energy efficient products, taking freelance IT work and doing speaking engagements. “I live deep in the woods to protect my family’s privacy and provide a normal childhood and refuge for my children where they’re out of the spotlight,” Jon tells In Touch.

“I’m happy with my life,” he shares with the mag. “The kids seem to have everything they need, too. They’re very happy when they’re with me. TV was Kate’s choice, and it was her choice to continue with the entertainment industry after I left the show.”
