John Mayer isn’t usually one to remain tight-lipped about his relationships— that is, until now.
The singer, 35, who recently split from singer Katy Perry, 28, sat down for a chat with Ellen DeGeneres where he confirmed that he and the “Firework” singer are no longer together and discussed the nature of their relationship.
"It was a very private relationship going in," he said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Tuesday, April 2. "It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship still.”
John, who has notoriously gabbed about the intimate details of his previous relationships— even having gone as far as likening his once-girlfriend Jessica Simpson to “sexual napalm” and “crack cocaine”— remained fairly mum about his most recent breakup.
Ellen then mentioned that the last time she’d seen John was at the Grammys, which he attended with Katy.
"I know Katy. She is a good friend, and I know that since then, you're not together anymore," the talk show host said. "And I just want to say, I love you and my thoughts are with you."
After thanking her for her sentiments, John continued to explain why he's keeping his mouth shut this time around. "I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," he explained. "I've been much happier since then."
He did hint, however, that things were complicated. "I'm on the same journey as everyone else," he said. "Coupling is a tricky thing."
