He’s usually known for his comedic acting skills, but Jack Black recently showed another side when he opening up to Parade magazine about his internal demons and “dark past.”
The 46-year-old recalled his battle with drug abuse after his parents divorced when he was a teenager.
“I remember just lots of turmoil from that period,” he said. “I was having a lot of troubles with cocaine… I was hanging out with some pretty rough characters. I was scared to go to school [because] one of them wanted to kill me.”

Jack continued to reveal that one of the most dramatic times in his life — the death of his brother Howard — has shaped him into being very protective of his two sons, ages 7 and 9.
“Losing a family member is the worst thing I could imagine,” he said. Jack’s brother lost his life at 31 years of age from AIDS in 1989.
He continued, “[Death] didn’t happen quickly. We all saw the deterioration. He was on 31. So very young. We were robbed of something precious. It was devastating. I was hard for all of us, but it was hardest for my mom when we lost Howard. She’s never really recovered.”
