The singer and songwriter passed away in New York Jan. 10 following an 18-month-long battle with cancer. The news of his passing was announced via Facebook, "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

Singer Lady Gaga honored David with a powerful performance during the 58th annual Grammy Awards.

Prince

The icon was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park Estate April 21. His unexpected passing came less than a week after a private plane had to make an emergency landing due to the singer reportedly collapsed from a Percocet overdose.

A later investigation would conclude the star died of an accidental opiate overdose.

Christina Grimmie

The former contestant on the The Voice was pronounced dead on June 10 after being shot by Kevin Loibl in Orlando.

Her brother, Mark Grimmie, managed to tackle the assailant before he eventually shot and killed himself. Kevin was reported to have been "infatuated" with Christina, and drastically changed his appearance with hair plugs and Lasik eye surgery in order to win her over.

Anton Yelchin

The Star Trek series actor died June 19 after his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards, pining the star against this residence's metal fence.

Police suspected Anton put his car in neutral just before exiting the vehicle, and had been standing behind it when the accident happened. Investigators determined his actual cause of death to be blunt traumatic asphyxiation.

Alan Rickman

The Harry Potter actor known for his role of Severus Snape passed away just after the new year following an arduous battle with cancer. His family confirmed the unfortunate news with a statement to BBC.

“The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.”

He is survived by his wife Rima Horton, whom he married in 2012.

José Fernandez

The Miami Marlins pitcher passed away after being involved in a boating accident late September. According to reports, Jose's body was found around 3:15 a.m. near Miami Beach.

The 24-year-old leaves behind an unborn daughter, whom he shared with girlfriend Maria Arias.

Angela Raiola aka "Big Ang"

The Mob Wives fan-favorite passed away following a heartbreaking battle with stage 4 lung cancer and brain cancer. The sad news was revealed on the reality star's Instagram page, and she is survived by son Anthony and daughter Raquel Donfrio.

The husband of singer Céline Dion died mid-January following his third battle with cancer; he was 73-years-old.

He is survived by the 47-year-old and their three children — five-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy and René-Charles, 14. He also has three adult children — Anne-Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre — from a previous relationship.

Joanie Laurer a.k.a. "Chyna"

The WWE star died April 20 following a suspected overdose, as the star was taking prescription medicine to treat her anxiety and insomnia.

"A lot was going on in her life emotionally, but she wasn't depressed," her manager Anthony Anzaldo said. "It was just a lot to deal with. She accidentally, over the course of two or three weeks, misused her legally prescribed medication."

Ron Lester

The Varsity Blues star passed away June 17 after suffering from multiple issues with his liver and kidneys; he was 45-years-old.

His manager, Dave Bradley, confirmed the news of his death via Facebook, and revealed he died painlessly while with his fiancée Jennifer Worland.
