In 1964, John Spinello invented the beloved board game “Operation,” and later sold the rights to the game for a mere $500. Now, nearly 50 years later, the 77-year-old has turned to crowd funding because he can’t afford his own operation!
He needs oral surgery that’ll cost him $25,000. To secure the necessary funds, toy insiders are selling copies of the game signed by John on ILoveOperation.com and set up a page on Crowdrise, which already raised more than $18,000 towards the cause, as of press time.
John, who holds the original patent to the creation, says he’s not bitter about the fortune Milton Bradley has made off his idea in the past 50 years — and instead has concentrated on his health.
“Look everyone needs medical care,” he told Huff Post. “I prefer not to dwell on that aspect and focus more on the joy that the game has brought to so many over the years.”
