A fan base is in mourning as Indian soccer player Peter Biaksangzuala passed away after a goal celebration went horribly wrong for the young athlete.
The 23-year-old proceeded to do somersaults in the air after he scored for his team, Bethlehem Vengthlang FC, against the Chanmari West FC in the 62nd minute of the game.
The midfielder fell mid-flip, hitting his head and ultimately killing himself as a result of damage to his spinal cord.
In response to his death, his team retired his jersey number — No. 21 — and posted a tribute on Facebook, which included a quote from his father, Mr. P Vanlalchhuana, about his son’s passion for the sport.
“I wanted my son to serve God since the day he was born,” he said. “His interest in football was undeniable so I allowed him to pursue his career in the sport that he loved. I feel he did a fine job and through football he somehow managed to speak to the heart of the people concerned.”
Peter will surely be missed by his teammates and fans.
