Rolling around in mud doesn’t seem like the smartest thing to do, but for Amandla Stenberg, her decision to do just that landed her one of the most coveted roles in the blockbuster flick The Hunger Games.
Prior to her nerve-racking audition for the coveted part of the beloved character Rue — the smallest and youngest Tribute — the 13-year-old got down and dirty, literally. “I put twigs and leaves in my hair,” she recalls during an exclusive interview with In Touch. “I looked like I’d been living in the woods for weeks!”
Luckily, her gutsy gamble paid off. “Gary Ross, the director, said he was impressed I had my own hair, makeup and wardrobe department!” she recalls with a calmness belying her tender years. Of course, it was far from a calm scene when Amandla announced she’d landed the part to her friends at school a couple of weeks later: “We were in the girls’ bathroom, and they just started screaming and running around the whole school!”
