“You’ve got to go out on a limb and rock out!” Cyndi Lauper tells In Touch of the funky fashion trail she’s been blazing since her iconic MTV videos in the ’80s.
The 59-year-old singer — now letting her true colors shine through on her new reality show, Still So Unusual — paved the way for pop queens of today like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry.
Looking back at her colorful frock from the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago, the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” singer proclaims, "Gay marriage was voted down in Illinois that year, so I decided that I was going to play there [at the Gay Games] and wear something that as soon they saw it they would scream and know exactly what I saying to them."
She adds, "I dressed like the Statue Of Liberty, like Mae West, did but instead of wearing the American flag, I wore the rainbow flag. That was because of the gay community...all they wanted was liberty."
And Cyndi prides herself in pushing the envelope when it comes to her style statements. “To me, playing it safe is boring!” she says of her fashion choices. “You gotta experiment.”
