Devon Staples — an actor who used to portray Gaston, among other characters, at Disney World — died this weekend after lighting a firework on his head. He was 22-years-old.
Devon was goofing off with the explosives in a friend’s backyard in his hometown of Calais, Maine, when the tragedy occurred on Saturday, July 4. His brother, Cody, was only a few feet away when the whole thing went down.

“There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left,” the bereaved 25-year-old tells the New York Daily News.
“It was a freak accident… but Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh.”

Stephen McCausland, a spokesperson for the State Department of Public Safety, told the Associated Press (via ABC News), “Apparently he thought that was a great idea. His friends thought they dissuaded him from doing it, and the next thing they knew, he ignited the fireworks and he was killed instantly. “
Devon’s tragic death marks the first fireworks-related fatality since fireworks were legalized on Jan. 1, 2012, authorities added. Cody says his brother, who was recently engaged, will be sorely missed.
“Anyone who would want to give a tribute to Devon should go out and do something nice for someone,” Cody says.
“Show some love to someone you don’t know. That kid was all about showing people love.”
