The 21-year-old X Factor judge appeared on Katie Couric’s daytime show, Katie, when the daytime host asked Demi to speak candidly about Miley.
“I think she knows what she’s doing,” Demi said with initial hesitation. “A lot of artists take that route of shock value and that’s totally fine and great, but she has such an amazing voice that’s overshadowed by some of the things she’s doing. [But] it’s her journey and she’s having fun and she’s being who she is and we’ll always love her.”
Demi went on to say that she and Miley have been friends since they were both a lot younger.
Ultimately, Demi explained that it’s not necessarily Miley that needs to change; but rather fans and parents alike need to change their expectations of her.
“I think the world needs to get over the fact that she was Hannah Montana when she was 16 or whatever,” Demi said.
Many former Disney Channel stars may seem to be losing their cookie-cutter images; between Demi and Zac Efron completing stints in rehab, Miley’s constant outlandish behavior, the Jonas Brothers breaking up and more; however, Demi explained to Katie that fans need to be more forgiving that they are young.
“We’re adults now,” she said. “I’m 21 and I’m nowhere near the person I was when I was 15 or 16—thank god—I’ve grown up; and we’re all in the process of doing that. So go a little easy on us, America!”
Demi also offered some insight on why her transition from Disney Channel star to professional adult performer may have gone a little smoother than Miley’s.
“I guess my transition was a little easier because I went straight to rehab,” she said, making Katie laugh. “I didn’t twerk—I went to rehab.”
