Each week, Dancing With the Stars promises a shocking elimination and last night the show delivered when America’s favorite TV mom, Florence Henderson, and her partner, Corky Ballas, were eliminated.
Despite receiving their highest score to date for their tango (21 out of a possible 30) and praise for improvement from the judges, it wasn’t enough to keep them safe from the dreaded red light. Given that Florence and Corky’s swan song was the theme from The Brady Bunch, a song the couple fought hard to get cleared for the show, her departure was bittersweet.
“You wouldn’t think of The Brady Bunch theme as tango, but Corky did really well with it,” Florence told In Touch after the performance. “I was really happy to have had the song as dancing to the alternative, The Addams Family, might not have really worked. “
After two weeks of threatened elimination, no one was more surprised to be safe last night than fellow competitor Bristol Palin. Her jive, on Monday’s show, was fraught with problems. After emerging in a gorilla suit, to dance to The Monkees theme, Bristol encountered challenges shedding the suit and received the night’s lowest score (18), yet still received praise for the performance. Considering judge Len Goodman’s disdain for the use of props in a performance, his praise came as quite a shock to everyone, including Bristol.
“I was waiting to get hit, but they were nice,” Bristol told In Touch after the performance. “They saw me trying to bring out my personality and were kind, but we both thought we would get hammered for it. I completely forgot the next dance moves and was focused on getting the suit off. It was definitely a big hiccup on my part.”
One thing is for sure, Florence’s bubbly presence will be missed by everyone. “I am trying not to cry,” revealed an emotional Brandy after the show. While Audrina Patridge ads, “She is such a sweet, nurturing person and a pleasure to be around. I am really going to miss her energy.”

Eliminated: October 19
Did you have a feeling it may be you leaving tonight?
Florence: The way things went I just thought, Corky, we are in trouble. So you don’t know.
A lot of people expected Bristol to be leaving. Is this a surprise?
Florence: I was a little surprised, but I have watched the show since it began and have seen absolutely shocking things on it and someone has to go.
Corky: A low score means nothing. We have had the lowest scores every show, so what does it mean? People have to vote as those votes are a big deal. It’s sad we are going on our best dance as Florence was just starting to crank it up. She was getting strong and starting to speed up her feet and just having a breakthrough.
What will you miss most about the show?
Florence: I am going to miss seeing Corky every day and learning the new dances. I have loved dancers since I started in the business. I am known as a singing actress and just to get to dance with a teacher like Corky has been amazing.
Who did you bond with in the cast?
Florence: I bonded with Bristol. I was like a mother figure to her from the beginning. Bristol was always close to me. I have had some deep talks with Brandy too, who has really opened up, so everybody. Brandy is great and letting her beautiful spirit come out.
What’s next for you?
Florence: I’m finishing my book, which will be out on Mother’s day. I just got a huge contract with Bausch & Lomb as I have 20/20 vision thanks to them and will be traveling around the country promoting them. I’ll continue to do my one woman show and Corky and I have some projects we are working on. The book is my memoir, but I am saving the title as it’s a unique one.
Will you continue to dance?
Florence: Oh yes, absolutely.
