Chrissy Metz, Chris Sullivan, and More Celebrities You Didn’t Know Wore Fat Suits for Their On-Screen Roles

Chris Sullivan (Toby) wears a fat suit on This Is Us.

Although the 36-year-old actor plays a character who's struggling to lose weight, his costar Susan Kelechi Watson recently dropped the bomb that Chris is surprisingly leaner in real life.

Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) wore a fat suit in all the Harry Potter movies.

“Being 15 years old in the middle of puberty, having to wear a fat suit," he said in 2017. "No one knows I’m wearing this d–n thing, they all just think I’m fat."

Raven-Symoné wore a fat suit during The State of Georgia.

The 31-year-old is known for her curvy figure, but back in 2011 she lost some weight — much to the dismay of execs at the ABC Family show The State of Georgia.

"They had me wear a fat suit," she said on The View in 2015. "Because they said I wasn't the size they wanted me to be."

Abigail Breslin (Olive) wore a fat suit in Little Miss Sunshine.

In the film, Abigail's character is supposed to be "chubby," so the actress wore a small fat suit throughout the film.

Emma Thompson (Karen) wore a fat suit in Love Actually.

The director felt the actress was too thin, and so he padded her clothes to made her look more "maternal."

"After my daughter was born, I've chosen to play an angry angel, a tortured woman and a monstrously ugly nanny," she said in 2005. "Oh, and I wore a fat suit for Love Actually."

Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) wore fat suit in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Back in 2009, the British actor had lost so much weight, his role was almost recast. But instead, they just put him in a fat suit. "I can now shed the child-actor thing, like the fat, and start a new career, because no one sees me as Dudley," he said in 2009.

Jill Scott (Sheila) wore a fat suit on Why Did I Get Married?

"I'm on average about a size 14," she said back in 2007. "My character is about double my size, about a size 28, so I wear a lot of padding over the course of the film. And it's been interesting the difference in the way that people look at and talk to me when I put Sheila's costumes on. It was very interesting to see that."

Steven Schirripa (Bobby Baccalieri) wore a fat suit during the first three seasons of The Sopranos.

"I got the role, and I got the script, and then I saw all these references," he said in 2012. "'You're fat this, you're fat that, you're a calzone with legs.' And I'm going, 'I'm not that much fatter than [Tony Soprano].'"

Steven went on to wear a fat suit for the first few seasons, but didn't wear one after season three.

"I guess they thought I got fat enough on my own, and I didn't wear it anymore," he said back then.

Dennis Quaid (Lawrence) wore a fat suit in Smart People.

In the 2008 film, Dennis played a college professor and donned a fat suit to better fit the character.

"I put on a fat suit every day, which gave me a wedgie and sort of helped me feel uncomfortable, which [my character] should be," he said at the time. "I wanted this guy to be kind of sedentary and then with the beard, as well. I had fun doing it."

Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) wore a fat suit in Les Misérables.

Hugh had to get beefed up for Wolverine while he was still shooting scenes for Les Misérables. "I started putting on size and the costume had to hide [my muscles]," he said in 2013. "I had to wear a bit of a fat suit here [pointing to his stomach], so it didn’t look like Jean Valjean was getting jacked.”

Chrissy Metz (Barbara Wiggles) wore a fat suit in American Horror Story.

The 36-year-old actress played the "fattest woman in the world" in the "Freak Show" season of American Horror Story, but producers wanted her to be even bigger. "We had a separate dressing tent, because [it was so big] I couldn't go in and out of my trailer," she said in 2015.
