This weekend, Investigation Discovery will kick off their three-part special on Casey Anthony’s case — appropriately titled Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery. And while the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee, and her subsequent murder trial were widely followed by the public — which helped the case earn the title of “social media trial of the century” — there are still some key facts that people may not remember about the case.

While the three-part special — which kicks off on Sunday, at 10 p.m., with subsequent episodes airing at the same time the following two nights — promises to provide new revelations about the case that “outraged the nation,” in the five years since she was acquitted for the murder of her daughter, there are many things that people may have forgotten about the 31-year-old’s trial.

Almost as soon as Caylee was reported missing by grandmother, the unusual circumstances surrounding her disappearance — the mysterious nanny who allegedly kidnapped the child, the aloof mother who didn’t seem to react to her daughter’s disappearance — the nation was hooked on following the investigation.

It was on June 16 that Caylee Anthony, 2, was last seen alive by her maternal grandparents, Cindy and George Anthony. She was videotaped swimming with her grandparents the day before.
Swimming would later play a key role in the defense’s argument, as they insisted that Caylee accidentally drowned in the pool, and Casey and her father panicked upon finding the toddler’s body and covered up her death.
