Ryan Gosling did not take home the award for Best Actor at the 2017 Oscars, losing the statue to Manchester by the Sea star Casey Affleck.
The 36-year-old was recognized for his work in La La Land, a film that went into the night with 14 nominations. He was previously nominated in 2007 for Half Nelson.

Casey was noticeably emotional after hearing his name called, telling the crowd, "This means so much to me, thank you."

"One of the first people who taught me how to act was Denzel Washington," he continued, "and I just met him tonight for the first time. Thank you. And to all the other nominees who did great work, I'm proud to be in your company. You guys are very brave and I admire what you do."

He added, "Man, I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say. I'm really proud to be apart of this community in general. I look out at all of you and I'm just dumbfounded that I'm included. It means a lot to me."
