Beyoncé Opens Up About
Beyoncé may have the perfect family now, but the star is opening up about having a miscarriage for the very first time in her new HBO documentary, Life Is But a Dream.
“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time. And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life,” the 31-year-old shared. “I envisioned what my child would look like … I was feeling very maternal."
Sadly, in the middle of her first pregnancy, something went wrong and the singer learned during a check-up that there was no longer a heartbeat. She dealt with her pain by doing what she does best: making music.

“I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life … And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through,” she explained.
But at the 2011 MTV Music Awards, Beyoncé announced the most wonderful news — that she was far along in her second pregnancy. In January 2012, she and hubby Jay-Z welcomed a healthy baby girl named Blue Ivy.
Following their big arrival, Jay-Z rapped about the miscarriage and their miracle baby in the song, “Glory.” “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you’d disappear/But nah baby you magic.”

“Being pregnant was very much like falling love,” the songstress, who’s set to entertain millions during this Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show, said. “You are so open. You are so overjoyed. There’s no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.”
Watch Beyonce get even more personal in her documentary when it airs Feb. 16 on HBO.
