Bethenny Frankel has taken drama to a new level with her return to the Real Housewives of New York. However, we learned the devastating truth about her childhood on last night’s episode.
The 44-year-old has been open before about not speaking with her mother, Bernadette Birk, but she told her therapist she reached out to her stepfather, John Parisella, who she admits was abusive, after decades of estrangement.
“Of all the three choices of parents that I’ve had, he wins the prize,” Bethenny, whose birth father left as a child, said in a separate scene.

The mother-of-one revealed John blamed his violent behavior on drug use and apologized for everything during their meet-up in Miami.
Also during the episode, Bethenny recalled her mother trying to kill herself in front of her, in addition to an upbringing surrounded by gambling and alcohol.
“You have to understand, she never wanted a child,” John told her.

“She never wanted a child? Excellent. That was evident,” Bethenny replied.
John tried to explain it was not right to hold on to the past, and the two ultimately made up and agreed that they would see each other again when Bethenny went to Miami next with four-year-old daughter, +Bryn+.
