Why Ben Seewald Is the Best of the Duggar Husbands (Really)

Over the years, Counting On fans have been introduced to a revolving door of Duggar-in-laws, from Ben Seewald to Derick Dillard to Jeremy Vuolo. Although viewers have different opinions of them (from finding Jeremy the "hottest" to finding Derick the most "annoying"), many fans have gradually come to a startling realization — Ben is by far the best of the Duggar husbands. We're not sure how we got to this point. When Ben first made his TV debut when he was courting Jessa Duggar in 2014, many viewers thought he was kind of, well, dumb. Once the young couple got hitched and officially got their Twitter and Instagrams up, they started rubbing many people the wrong way with their fire and brimstone tweets about abortion and how others were going to "burn in hell."

However, over the years, fans have noticed that the couple has become more, dare we say, relaxed? As Ben took to Twitter to profess his love for Christian rap and his laidback approach of letting Jessa be the "boss" of the house, he's gradually won people over. "Who would have thought he would turn out to be the best Duggar husband so far?" one fan wrote. "Ben would be the Duggar husband you'd want to marry if you had to choose one," another wrote.

Although Ben definitely is not some progressive idealistic Superman, he is more open-minded than the Jim Bob Duggars of the world. And that's saying a lot. Below, more ways Ben is the only Duggar-in-law we might want to hang out with…maybe.

He's "progressive."

Okay, not really, but compared to the rest of the Duggar clan and extreme fundamentalists, Ben is practically liberal (sort of) and is outspoken about a lot of issues his peers stay weirdly silent about. He has openly supported Black Lives Matter, has tweeted his support of the #TakeAKnee movement, and even conducted an interview with rapper Flame about how Christians should fight racism together. He's also retweeted numerous tweets against President Trump, and even retweeted an article about interracial marriage, much to the surprise of one of his followers who replied, "I'm surprised your (sic) ok w/this, considering how you & your family hate everyone who isn't just like you & hold your same beliefs."

However, does this mean Ben leans to the left politically? Absolutely not. He believes people should put their trust in Jesus above politics, but he overall seems to have a knack for tackling controversial topics without attacking others — at least not recently.

He lets Jessa be the boss.

Sure fans might hate Jessa's "controlling" nature, but considering how Duggar women are taught to be loyal and submissive to their husbands, it's a little refreshing to see a Duggar wife be as outspoken as Jessa is. According to the TV family's faith, they believe women should listen to their husbands, which means Ben must be totally fine with Jessa taking charge. And considering he's currently bumping heads with Jim Bob on the matter, we think this is a very good thing.

He cooks!

If we were talking about any other guy this wouldn't be such a big deal, but considering we're talking about the Duggars who normally believe a woman's place is in the kitchen and a man's place is in the workforce, it's kind of nice to see a Duggar-in-law who can throw it down in the kitchen (even if his cooking looks like dog food — sorry).

He's nicer than Derick.

Well, this was an easy one. Jill's husband Derick is often under fire for starting rude Twitter arguments with his fans and even saying rude and vile things to transgender TLC star Jazz Jennings, which ultimately got him fired from the show. As for Ben, he's a lot more respectful about dealing with other people who have opinions that are different from his own. "I can disagree with someone's beliefs and let them know while still respecting them as a person," he wrote on Twitter. "It's called respectful disagreement." If only Derick would take his advice.

He raps…or at least tried to.

Normally we would laugh at the idea of some nerdy dude trying to rap, but considering the Duggars don't listen to secular music or even dance, Ben's love of Christian hip-hop is delightfully radical…ya know, for a Duggar. He also promotes Christian rappers on his Instagram and even shared his Spotify playlist that was full of hip-hop. As for his own rapping? Uh, pass the ear bleach.

He's moving away from his strict Duggar beliefs?

In November 2017, he retweeted this tweet about women's places in society. "God created Eve as a co-heir of his Kingdom promises, an ally in dominion and discipleship," the tweet, written by blogger Jasmine Holmes, said. "Yet I keep seeing 'helpmeet' translated as 'cleaner of messes, cooker of food, doer of chores.'" Many fans were surprised and excited when Ben retweeted this. "Ben Seewald, fundie feminist!" one fan wrote. "A girl can dream!"
