The ex factor will come into play at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, with former couple Drake and Rihanna leading the pack with five nominations each. Rihanna will have two chances to take home the coveted Video of the Year prize: She's nominated for both "We Found Love" and her duet with Drake, "Take Care."

Let's hope security has its eye out for Drake's rival and Rihanna's on and off flame Chris Brown, whose song "Turn Up the Music" will compete with "Take Care" for Best Male Video. Rihanna's BFF and last year's big winner, Katy Perry, follows up strong with four nominations, including a nod for Video of the Year for "Wide Awake."

Other highlights? The show will introduce a new Best Electronic Dance Music Video category (nominees include Skrillex and Calvin Harris), and British boy band sensation One Direction (nominees for Best New Artist) will take the VMA stage for the first time ever.

The show will air live from the Staples Center in LA on September 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
