Seeing The Little Mermaid’s Ariel kissing her father probably shocked you when you first saw it—which is probably exactly the reaction artist Saint Hoax intended to illicit with the scandalous piece of art.
The poster—which reads, “46-percent of minors who are raped are victims of family members. It’s never too late to report your attack”—is part of a project appropriately titled “Princest Diaries.”
The purpose of the project is to not only bring attention to the shockingly high rates at which incestual sexual abuse occurs, but also encourage victims of such abuse to come forward against their attackers.
The artist was inspired to take action after learning a close friend had been raped by her father at age 7.
“That story shocked me to my core,” she told the Huffington Post.
“As an artist/activist I decided to shed light on that topic again in a new form. I used [a] Disney princess because it’s a visual language that my targeted audience would be attracted to.”
