Say it ain’t so!
America’s sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon, and her husband, Jim Toth, were both arrested in Atlanta this weekend when the CAA Agent’s vehicle was pulled over after a police officer noticed the car swerving.
While Jim, 42, who had been operating the car, was being charged with a DUI— his blood alcohol level was recorded as .139— the actress, 38, got into a verbal altercation with the arresting officer.
According to the police report, "Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet."
But the southern belle didn’t stop there.
Reese then asked the officer, "Do you know my name?" to which he replied, "No, I don't need to know your name," then adding, "Right now."
With alarming disapproval, the star then told the cop, "You're about to find out who I am. You're going to be on national news." According to the report, the law enforcement official then told Reese that was fine.
The Sweet Home Alabama star stepped out of the car after being told to stay seated in the vehicle, and according to the report, she “stated that she was a ‘US citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’" She was then charged with disorderly conduct for getting into a verbal altercation with the officer.
The couple, who were in the area for Reese's filming of The Good Lie, were both jailed briefly and released from custody at 3:30 a.m. on Friday. A court appearance is scheduled for Monday at 8 a.m. in Atlanta, though it's expected neither will appear for the hearing. Their attorney is expected to request that the court date be postponed.
They pair welcomed their first child together, Tennessee James, in September.
