The Outsiders (1983)

Patrick played as Darrel "Darry" Curtis in a cast chock-full of up-and-coming stars including Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. The young actor played Ponyboy Curtis's older brother in the iconic book-turned-movie.
Dirty Dancing (1987)


Patrick played the lead alongside Jennifer Grey in this coming-of-age drama. His performance as dance instructor Johnny Castle earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
Road House (1989)


The actor's next big role came in Road House, a film about a bouncer at a newly refurbished roadside bar who protects a small town in Missouri from a corrupt businessman.
Ghost (1990)

This beloved romantic fantasy and crime thriller also starred Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg and told the story of a young woman and the ghost of her murdered lover. Patrick was again nominated for a Golden Globe for this iconic role.
Saturday Night Live (1990)

Patrick's turn as guest host on the late-night variety show brought one of the program's most memorable sketches of all time when the actor and comedian Chris Farley portrayed two men auditioning to be Chippendales dancers.

In this film, Patrick played a New York drag queen who embarked on a road trip with his two friends. The actor received his third Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category for this role.
