Last night, after 12 emotional and captivating seasons, Bones aired its series finale.

It was a bittersweet moment saying goodbye to Bones and Booth — and many fans are wondering, why did Bones end when it did?

Many of the show’s cast — including Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz — and crew have weighed in on why the series came to an end when it did!

“It wasn’t our decision,” Hart Hanson, the executive producer of the series, told reporters. “We were told it was our last year. It wasn’t that we called the network and said, ‘We’d like to finish now.’ I’m not sure anybody is terribly upset or terribly shocked that it would be the last year.”

While Emily — who plays the titular character — wasn’t thrilled about the news, she understood the network’s decision.

“It would be ungracious of us to be fighting against them canceling us, but yeah, it wasn’t our decision. But we’ve had a great run,” she explained. “We’ve had several season finales that could have been our last, and at times we didn’t know it it would be our last. And amazingly, they’ve come up with new ways to end it. They could be the very end, or it could be the beginning of the end, many, many times.”

While the show has only been off the air for hours at this point, the stars and the crew have already discussed the possibility of a reboot — considering Fox is the same network that brought Prisonbreak and 24 back to life. While Hanson said a reboot is “always possible, and very desirable,” David Boreanaz seemed less enthusiastic.

“It’s very hard for me to answer that question, honestly,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in six hours. I mean, you’re asking a hypothetical question, but everything is possible in life. But I tend to like to go forward. I don’t like to go backwards… In general, I don’t like reunions and I don’t like to go back.”

But if Emily’s answer reminded us of anything, it’s never to say never.

“I would say I would like some time before I consider that,” she said. “We’ve put 12 years into show and that’s not nothing… That’s not to say I wouldn’t consider it in a certain amount of time, but I think we need to have some time pass before I consider it.”
