In a revealing new interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen revealed that they are retiring from acting.

The girls, who have been in front of camera since they were nine months old for their Full House debut, explained that they always felt more like they were establishing themselves as a brand, rather than compiling reels as actresses.

“With what we were doing in business when we were younger, I don’t think it ever felt like we were actresses,” MK said. “Because we spend so much more of our time not in front of the cameras, building a brand.”

Ashley agreed, that from the time they were younger, they were working on building an image. She said, “I always looked at myself, even as a kid, as a business woman.”

To be fair, they were businesswomen at an abnormally young age; at the astonishing age of 6 years old, they founded Dualstar Entertainment Group—which put out their feature films such as It Takes Two, Billboard Dad, New York Minute, Passport to Paris and more—as well as their video series, The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley and You’re Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley’s Party.

Mary-Kate attributed this success to their family and the way they were raised.

“We were always hard workers as kids,” Mary-Kate said. “It’s just the way we are, the way we were raised. Our work ethic was everything, and that never left us.”

That same work ethic is definitely there, as seen by their success in the fashion industry; the twins, both 27, not only have their couture line, The Row, but they also have retails labels, Elizabeth and James, Olsenboye and StyleMint—as well as a new fragrance that just launched.

Fans shouldn’t worry about losing MK and A to an industry that’s often behind closed doors, or only makes appearances for the world’s multiple fashion weeks; the fashionistas assured WWD that they could still make appearances in Hollywood—just not on-screen.

“We still feel welcome in the [entertainment] industry,” Mary-Kate said. “But it’s not the one we’re in.”
