Former gymnast Shawn Johnson and her husband, Andrew East, bravely shared heartbreaking news over the weekend: The couple had miscarried their first child. The Olympic gold medalist and Dancing With the Stars champion — who married her football player husband in April 2016 — detailed how she discovered she was pregnant and then later how she miscarried after eight weeks. "It's been an emotional roller coaster," Shawn said in a video posted to YouTube. "You go from shocked to 'holy crap' to 'I can't do this' to 'Let's do this' and now it's like, 'I pray to God I can do this.'"

In the video, Shawn, 25, waited for pregnancy test results before she tearfully exclaimed to the camera that she was going to be a mom. "How am I going to tell Andrew?" she said in an early part of the video. "He's going to be a daddy." Later, however, she revealed that she had "started having really bad stomach pains and a lot of bleeding, which is not good for a pregnancy." After several tests, doctors confirmed that the retired gymnast had miscarried.

People quickly commented, offering their condolences to the couple. One person wrote, "Aw I’m so sorry Shawn ? thanks for sharing with us. You guys will be in our prayers. Losing a baby, no matter how far along, is never easy ❤️❤️ you guys will be amazing parents one day and that baby will have so much love." Another added, "Wow…I don't think I've ever met anyone so brave in my entire life. I never could ever do or get anywhere close to how well you opened up and told us. You are a VERY strong woman, Shawn. You both are and I will keep you both in my prayers that you only get stronger and stronger every day." A third chimed in, "I'm holding back tears, this video is so powerful…"

Despite the heartache, Andrew noted how the experience had changed them for the better. "We've grown through this, babe, and I can't emphasize enough how proud I am of you," he said in the video. "We know everything happens for a reason," Shawn added. "We believe God's got a bigger plan for us. All we can do is be positive, otherwise, we just sink into a hole."
